Indeed, you don't have this feature in your AFH forum, probably because you have your HTML set to 'Use HTML template' so all new options aren't implemented in your forum.
Open your Forms template and right after Subject<BR>
<input type="text" name="subject" style="width: 500px;" value="RE: Testing meta description" maxlength="80" TABINDEX=2><BR>

insert this lines of code...
[if_showmetadesc]
Meta Description, a small comment about the message<BR>
<input type="text" name="metadesc" style="width: 500px;" value="" maxlength="75" TABINDEX=3><BR>
[end_showmetadesc]

should look like this after



Click Change after you're done and test it

Actually, I didn't switch to html because I didn't want to miss out on updates. I found it though on the main settings page under enable/disable features is a check box for "Show field 'Meta Description' on 'Add Topic' Form."

Thank you for your clear and informative reply though, I'm sure others who have switched to the html will find your suggestion helpful.
